چکیده

We present detailed instructions for constructing and operating an optical trap using a hollow core fiber and two-laser beams. The trap is stable, confining 100-nm to 10-mm particles of a variety of materials for hours of leisurely observation. The trap operates at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, costs less than $1400, and requires no machining. The hollow fiber provides automatic relative beam alignment and shields trapped particles from the ambient convective flow. An experiment and analysis of the Mie scattering from the trapped particle is outlined. A list of other interesting experiments based on the trap is provided. © 2000 American Association of Physics Teachers.

Calculation and optical measurement of laser trapping forces on non-spherical particles

Optical trapping, where microscopic particles are trapped and manipulated by light is a powerful and widespread technique, with the single-beam gradient trap (also known as optical tweezers) in use for a large number of biological and other applications. The forces and torques acting on a trapped particle result from the transfer of momentum and angular momentum from the trapping beam to the pa...

Light Structuring for Massively Parallel Optical Trapping

iv Abstract Optical trapping, discovered in the 70's, allows moving and stabilizing small objects which sizes varies from atoms to particles of several microns. This technique, based on momentum conservation, is particularly well suited for manipulating biological matter (cells, organelles, vesicles, functionalized particles , etc.) and offers interesting potentialities for research in biotechn...

Trapping of cold excitons in quantum well structures with laser light.

Optical trapping and manipulation of neutral particles has led to a variety of experiments from stretching DNA-molecules to trapping and cooling of neutral atoms. An exciting recent outgrowth of the technique is an experimental implementation of atom Bose-Einstein condensation. In this Letter, we propose and demonstrate laser-induced trapping for a new system--a gas of excitons in quantum well ...

Photophoretic trapping of multiple particles in tapered-ring optical field.

We demonstrate the photophoretic trapping of more than several hundreds of absorbing particles by tapered-ring optical traps diffracted from a circular aperture. The experiments with different laser powers show the influence of air flow acting on particles. Three kinds of particles with different densities (about 1~7 g/cm(3)) and different shapes (spherical, non-spherical) can be trapped. The n...

Observation of Electron Trapping in an Intense Laser Beam

180 LLE Review, Volume 79 Since the discovery of the ponderomotive force over 40 years ago, it has been known that charged particles interacting with an oscillating electromagnetic field will seek regions of low intensity.1 It was immediately proposed that with the appropriate field distribution, particles could be trapped with this force.2 The case of electron confinement with a specially shap...
